"Pop Culture Maven" Emily S. Whitten is an award-winning writer and the co-creator of the award-nominated The Underfoot middle-grade graphic novel series (Oni-Lion Forge Publishing Group), an epic sci-fi saga about intelligent hamsters with special skills struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.
The Underfoot series debuted in 2019 with Volume 1, The Underfoot: The Mighty Deep (nominations: 2020 Ringo Award for Best Kids Comic or Graphic Novel; 2022-23 Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award for Graphic Novels Grades 6-9). Volume 2 of the series, The Underfoot: Into the Sun, was published in April 2021.
Emily is also a genre and pop culture journalist and program host, TV and audio media personality, convention organizer, and attorney. Emily's columns, interviews, and webcomics have appeared on ComicMix, Movers & Shakers Unlimited, Reelz.com, MTV.com, and more. She is also known to some as her alter-ego, Ask Deadpool.
When Emily is not writing, she’s sharing geeky thoughts via radio shows and podcasts such as Fantastic Forum, The CCC Podcast, and Made of Fail, as well as via TV and video. As a convention organizer and consultant, Emily co-founded The North American Discworld Convention; and she has served as senior staff for the NADWCon and Awesome Con. She is a regular panelist and program host at genre conventions.
Emily grew up in New Jersey, received her higher education from Indiana University Bloomington and The George Washington University Law School, and now resides in the greater D.C. area. In her copious spare time Emily enjoys crafting, reading, exploring the great outdoors, and looking after her tiny hamster. And when she's not doing all that, Emily holds down a regular 9-to-5 as an attorney - although that may just be her super-heroine cover identity.
